Personal Statement:

Dr. Poen received his medical degree and radiation oncology training at UCLA where he earned numerous awards and honors and published original research on the treatment of breast cancer. In 1993 he was appointed to the faculty at Stanford University where he taught radiation therapy to medical students and residents, directed the Gastrointestinal Oncology Comprehensive Cancer Clinic and Tumor Board and developed an expertise in stereotactic radiosurgery. In 1999 he earned the rank of Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology and became director of the Stanford University Radiation Oncology residency training program. While at Stanford he served as principal investigator in radiation therapy clinical research trials, lectured extensively on a range of cancer topics, and authored several medical textbook chapters and peer reviewed publications on the treatment of brain tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, pancreatic cancer, rectal cancer and Hodgkins lymphoma. In 2000 he left Stanford University and moved to Marin to be able to spend more time with his family. The guiding principle in his career has been to treat each of his patients as he would treat a member of his family. This requires making himself available to see patients on short notice, seeking to understand all of the relevant medical and personal issues, and ultimately delivering the highest possible quality of treatment with care and compassion.
